Who are we?
- The Cape Cod Sail and Power Squadron is a recreational boating club
on Cape Cod with over 250 male and female members. We are
sailors, power boaters and paddlers who enjoy being on the
legendary waters surrounding Cape Cod.
- Founded in 1941, the squadron has been a part of the Cape’s nautical
tradition for over six decades.
- The squadron is a unit of a large national organization - the United
States Power Squadrons® - with about 60,000 members organized
into 450 squadrons throughout the United States.
What do we do?
- There is a special camaraderie among people who love to “mess
around in boats”. We get together throughout the year to share our
interest in (and knowledge of) boating.
- Monthly Dinners: monthly dinners are held at various restaurants on
the Cape. Dinner programs have a nautical/marine theme except for
our Holiday Party in December. Every summer we have a traditional
New England Lobster Bake prepared by our members.
- On-the-Water Activities: rendezvous take place each year in Oak
Bluffs, Nantucket, and Egg Island – Hyannis. Members and guests
come to the Egg Island rendezvous in canoes and kayaks as well as
sail and power boats. There is also a fourth rendezvous organized
just for paddlers.
- Educational Courses: we conduct boating courses for the public
and more advanced courses for our members: Seamanship, Piloting,
Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation and Navigation. Other member
courses include electives in Sailing, Engine Maintenance, Marine
Electronics, Cruise Planning, Weather, and Instructor Development.
Members teach all our courses. If you are interested, you can
become a certified instructor. (See Courses Offered)
- Vessel Safety Checks: during the boating season as a public service
our members conduct courtesy Vessel Safety Checks. We train
those who volunteer to become qualified Vessel Examiners.
(Read more about a Vessel Safety Check)
- Cooperative Charting: the squadron participates in a cooperative
charting program with the federal National Ocean Service helping to
keep nautical chart information up-to-date.
Why become a member?
- The only prerequisite for membership is the successful completion of a USPS public
boating course, an equivalent course, or boating experience. Additional family
members – although a boating safety course is recommended – may become members
without taking a boating course or having boating experience. There is no boat
ownership requirement, and many members do not own one.
- Whether you want to have more fun boating, gain additional nautical competence and
confidence, have the personal satisfaction of teaching others, conduct vessel safety
checks, participate in the cooperative charting program, or just enjoy the fellowship of
other boaters, you should join the Cape Cod Sail and Power Squadron.
