Weather Course
A veering wind will clear the sky;
A backing wind says storms are nigh.
Just as they have over the centuries, responsible mariners today study
the weather for practical reasons and practical concerns. The safety and
comfort of those who venture out on the water have always been
weather dependent. Even the ancients, however, had a curiosity beyond
the practical as they mused and theorized about what causes weather
events.
The all-new USPS Weather Course gives students an opportunity to
experience the same fascination but with the benefit of modern science.
This completely revised course covers dramatic weather events (e.g.
nor’easters, hurricanes) as well as the more benign weather conditions
that challenge boaters (e.g. wind, rain, fog).
The text reflects a major reordering of subjects that combines modern
topics such as Internet resources and traditional ones such as marine
folklore.
While the USPS Weather Course obviously deals with marine matters, it is
basically a general weather course designed for those sitting in their
living rooms as much as those standing behind the helm.
